Masvingo – The Zimbabwe Energy Workers Union (ZEWU), one of the country’s biggest trade union organizations has donated stationery and soccer balls to the victims of the Tokwe-Mukorsi floods disaster.
The donations were presented to the Minister of State for Masvingo, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti by ZEWU president, Mrs. Angeline Chitambo at the Minister’s offices in Masvingo on Friday.
After the presentation, the ZEWU team that included its Treasurer General Knowledge Siriva, General Secretary Martin Chikuni and executive member Shake Matake then went to tour the Chingwizi Holding Camp where they met the victims and got to understand more their problems.
Chitambo told the Minister that Union membership was touched by the plight of the people of Tokwe and in particular they were disturbed that lessons for children were being disrupted and the learning environment had become extremely difficult.
“We are workers and the children suffering at Chingwizi Holding Camp are children of workers. We feel for them just as we would have felt for our own children. We said to ourselves that as a union we did not have much but let’s share the little that we have with fellow Zimbabweans who finds themselves in a difficult situation.,” said Chitambo.
In accepting the donation, Bhasikiti said one of the biggest problems at Chingwizi was the education of children. He said a lot of material for them including books had been destroyed by the floods.
“We thank you for this generous gesture. It will go a long way in alleviating the situation of the children at the camp,’ said Bhasikiti.
